Australia is recommitting its support to the PNG Institute of Medical Research (PNGIMR) to continue institutional strengthening via the Strengthening Research and Operational Needs through Good Infrastructure and Modernisation (STRONGIM IMR) program. This investment builds on our partnership dating back to 2019, with a focus on building safe, accessible and productive workplaces; installing IT improvements and upgrades; strengthening the capacity to conduct collaborative and impactful research in emerging fields ; and fortifying administrative and support services.
Together, these strategic investments will enable PNGIMR to continue to produce research on PNG’s priority health programs at an international standard by expanding the capacities of its strongest research programs and building the human and technological resources in emerging fields. It will also enable PNGIMR to continue its vital national role in the surveillance of infectious diseases, laboratory strengthening, and trialling diagnostic tools and treatments for the benefit of all Papua New Guineans and our region. Australia’s support for PNGIMR will also strengthen research on social, cultural, and behavioural factors affecting health and health equity in PNG.
STRONGIM IMR is funded by the Partnerships for a Healthy Region initiative and the Australian High Commission in PNG.
