Gender shouldn’t be a barrier to accessing a COVID-19 vaccine.
With Australian support, the Samoan Government is using the Tamanu platform to help track patients who have been immunised to ensure that no one is left behind. By using the Tamanu platform, the Samoan Government is keeping track of patients who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and breaking this data down by gender.
As of 8 September 2021, 78.9% of Samoa’s eligible population had received a first dose of the Covid-19 vaccination with 52% being male recipients and 47% being female. Samoa is now able to use this data to target women in areas with low vaccination rates.
The Samoan government is also using the data to publicly share the progress of their vaccine rollout in daily updates via Facebook and Twitter. Using visual heatmaps and daily updated vaccine statistics the Samoan Government can publicise in near-real time areas where large uptake of vaccination is occurring while also uploading provincial vaccination rates to promote healthy competition between provinces and boost vaccine targets.
